Welcome to GareValier

Planning a trip often involves weighing multiple factors - time, cost, convenience, and comfort. GareValier is designed to take the guesswork out of this equation by providing a clear comparison of different transportation options between your starting point (like a train station or bus stop) and your final destination.

Unlike comprehensive route planners that can be overwhelming with too many options, GareValier focuses on the essential factors that matter most to commuters and travelers: the total door-to-door travel time and the total cost. Our unique "value score" calculation helps you understand which option gives you the best balance between time savings and cost.

Whether you're a daily commuter trying to optimize your route to work, a traveler planning an intercity journey, or someone simply looking for the most economical way to get from point A to point B, GareValier provides the insights you need to make informed decisions.

Our tool is particularly useful for comparing options where different modes of transportation might be viable. Should you take the train that gets you closer to your destination but requires a taxi ride at the end? Or is the bus that stops right near your destination actually the better option when you consider all factors? GareValier helps answer these questions with clear, data-driven comparisons.

By focusing on station-to-destination comparisons rather than full route planning, we provide a specialized service that complements (rather than competes with) existing mapping tools. Think of GareValier as your personal travel economist, helping you maximize the value of every journey.

How to Use GareValier

1

Enter Your Data

For each transportation option you want to compare (train, bus, or ride-share/taxi), enter:

  • The main journey time (in minutes)
  • The ticket cost or estimated fare (in dollars)
  • The time needed to get to/from stations or stops (0 for ride-share/taxi)

You don't need to fill in all options - just the ones you want to compare.

2

Calculate Comparison

Click the "Compare Options" button to see your results.

Our tool will calculate:

  • Total door-to-door travel time for each option
  • Total cost for each option
  • A "value score" showing cost per minute saved
3

Analyze Results

Review the comparison to see which option offers the best balance of time and cost for your needs.

Consider:

  • Which option has the best value score?
  • How much time would you save with faster options?
  • How much would you save with cheaper options?
  • Are the differences significant enough to change your usual choice?

You can adjust your inputs and recalculate to test different scenarios.

Success Stories

Michael R.

Daily Commuter

"I was taking the train every day to work because it seemed faster, but GareValier showed me that when I factor in the 15-minute walk to the station and waiting time, the bus that stops right outside my office is actually only 5 minutes slower and saves me $8 per day. That's $160/month!"

Sarah L.

College Student

"As a student, every dollar counts. GareValier helped me realize that splitting my trip - taking the train most of the way and then a short rideshare - was actually cheaper than taking the bus all the way home on weekends, and saved me nearly an hour each trip. The value score made it so clear!"

Dr. James K.

Medical Professional

"When I have to visit our satellite clinic across town, time is critical. GareValier showed me that while the taxi is more expensive, the time I save allows me to see 2 more patients each visit. The value score clearly justified the additional cost for my practice."

The Chen Family

Family Travelers

"Planning trips with two kids is always a challenge. GareValier helped us realize that for our monthly visits to grandma, driving to a further train station with cheaper parking actually made the train competitive with driving all the way - and much less stressful with the kids!"

Frequently Asked Questions

While Google Maps provides comprehensive route planning with multiple transportation options, GareValier focuses specifically on comparing different modes of transportation for station-to-destination journeys. Our tool emphasizes the complete door-to-door time and cost comparison, and provides a unique "value score" that helps you evaluate the cost-effectiveness of time savings between options.

The value score is calculated as cost per minute saved compared to the slowest option. We take the difference in total cost between two options and divide it by the difference in total time. This gives you a dollar amount that represents how much extra you're paying for each minute saved (or how much you're saving for each extra minute spent). Lower scores indicate better value.

Yes, for the most accurate comparison, you should include any expected waiting time in your total journey time. For example, if you typically wait 10 minutes for your train after arriving at the station, add that to the train's journey time. The same applies to bus schedules or ride-share pickup times.

Currently, our tool supports comparing up to three options at once (train, bus, and ride-share/taxi). However, you can run multiple comparisons if you have more options to evaluate. We recommend focusing on your most likely options first to simplify your decision-making process.

The accuracy of results depends entirely on the accuracy of the inputs you provide. We recommend using your typical or expected times and costs based on your experience. For ride-shares, you might want to check current fare estimates in your app before entering them into our tool.

Our tool doesn't automatically account for real-time traffic conditions. You should adjust your estimated journey times based on typical conditions for your trip. For example, if you're planning a rush hour commute, use times that reflect rush hour traffic rather than off-peak times.

Currently, GareValier doesn't have a save feature as we don't require user accounts. However, you can bookmark the page with your inputs in the URL (coming in a future update) or simply note down your typical inputs for regular trips. Many users find that after a few uses, they remember the optimal options for their common routes.

We focus on motorized transportation options where there are meaningful time and cost trade-offs to consider. For walking or cycling, the cost is typically $0 and the time is whatever your walking/cycling speed allows. You could theoretically include walking as a "ride-share" option with $0 cost if you want to compare it to other options.

If you're driving to a train station and parking, add the parking cost to the "Ticket Cost" field for the train option. Similarly, include the time to park and walk to the station in the "Time to/from Stations" field. This gives you a complete picture of that option's total cost and time.

Yes! We're planning to add features like saving comparisons, sharing results, more transportation options, and possibly integration with transit APIs for automatic time/cost data. Sign up for our newsletter (coming soon) to stay updated on new features.
